Leadership Styles

New business, small businesses, medium size businesess or large organizations all need one common trait. That is effective and functional leadership. Without it success will remain elusive.

Let us concentrate on the leadership styles which linearly influence the working environment in your business and consequently alter the emotional output of your people within organization and outside people as your customers and clients.

Analysis of the reviews taken by surveying agencies like Yelp etc. reveals that there are some incidence reported that patrons were extremely satisfied with the quality of goods/foods etc. but have complaints for either the behaviors of the people who serve (customer service) or the modes of services which may not suits to their personal or cultural needs.

In wake of above facts it is imperative that each and every businessperson have the proper understanding of leadership.

We will take a short tour of the different ways to lead first. Leadership styles are meant to provide a manner and direction to implementing carved plans and then motivate people to fulfill this plan. Lewin et al (1939) establish three major leadership styles and they are (U.S. Army Handbook, 1973):

  • Autocratic: In this style leaders tell their employees to accomplish the given task as per their wish and the ways that they decide without seeking their advice or views.

This style can justify when team is in short of time, all necessary information and skills available to solve the problem and all team members are well motivated.

Apart from the conditions given above if this style is used it may term as bossing people around and considered as unprofessional and abusive. It has no place in leader’s repertoire.

  • Democratic: This style involves employee or a group of employee in decision making process with the leaders.

Of course leader is not bound to take all decisions according to the teams wishes but this kind of concession build a mutual confidence among the organization and lead to better out put if all have acquire enough knowledge to fulfill the tasks. No doubt this seems a slow process but it will have a good impact in the long run.

  • Delegative: As a successful businessman you have to carry out enormous tasks and may not have enough time and energy to indulge in other miscellaneous management problems. So this kind of situation demands the initial training of employees to be able to take timely decisions without contesting the leader/owner every time. In this way the business will run more smoothly.

Here the ultimate liabilities/responsibilities remain on leaders/owners for all decisions made by their employees so leaders/owners have quality or should prepare themselves for such situations and never indulge into the blame games. Instead they have to train their staff further and should take proper steps to avoid future incidents.

A smart leader always uses all the styles with accordance that the situation demands. There are some more leadership theories to define types of leadership but we will take superficial views rather than go into the details.

      • Autocratic Leadership

      • Bureaucratic Leadership

      • Charismatic Leadership

      • Democratic Leadership/Participative Leadership

      • Laissez-faire Leadership

      • People-oriented Leadership/Relations-Oriented Leadership

      • Servant leadership

      • Task-oriented Leadership

      • Transactional Leadership

      • Transformational Leadership

Leadership styles influence the level of the motivations and vice versa i.e. man’s motivations influenced by changing ambitions and/or he/she works under or socialized with.

Self-motivated individuals and visionaries will not accept authority controlled environments. They will find a way to escape if trapped.

In a team-motivated environment, dependency types will become inspired and strive to be acceptable with independent thinking coworkers.
