With the advent of Youtube, a marketing strategy which is viral marketing, gained its much deserved attention. Youtube is one of the many online video hosting sites that served to be useful to this type of marketing. Youtube gained its popularity and entered the mainstream in 2006 and since has been the leader of video sharing websites.

Not long after, competition for Youtube started to take actions to develop more appealing sites and features. But despite of these efforts, some analysts say that up to this point, Youtube stays to be superior among these sites.

The list of Youtube competitors is quite long. However, here is a list of the competition that somehow made an impact to the users:

Youtube Competition / MySpaceTV

Description and features
One of the most popular and widely used of all the Youtube competition is MySpaceTV. It was launched in early 2007 and currently operates in beta mode. This site is available in 7 languages and 15 countries around the globe. Aside from user-generated content, it also showcases 5-minute clips of Classic TV shows which are aptly called Sony Minisodes. It also features video charts and has teamed up with Reuters, National Geographic, and the New York Times to bring quality content to users.

Similarities with Youtube
Just like Youtube, MySpaceTV is available for all to view but only registered users can upload content. It also has featured channels and videos. Many even observe that MySpaceTV has almost the same interface as Youtube.


Youtube Competition / Yahoo! Video


Description and features
Yahoo! Video started as video search engine but after some time added video sharing capabilities to its users in June 2006. Its current redesigned format was launched in early 2008. The Yahoo! Video homepage contains featured videos that change daily and are more inclined towards humor, talent showcase, animation, viral videos, bizarre stuff, and quality entertainment content.

Similarities with Youtube
It’s free service allows users to search, view, upload, and save videos to ‘favorites’.  Just like Youtube, it allows users to create playlists, subscribe to channels, and embed videos in various web pages and blog posts.


Youtube Competition / MSN Video


Description and features

MSN Video is another Youtube competition that was created and run by Microsoft. Some of its features are contents such as iFilm picks, JibJab, and TV shows such as Arrested Development.  MSN Soapbox started as an invitation-only public beta in early 2007. Presently, it now allows uploading of videos.

The major difference however is that MSN has a clear cut statement in its privacy policy regarding the prohibition of use of copyrighted materials. This is strictly not allowed and any video uploaded violating this regulation will be deleted.

Similarities with Youtube
MSN Video also features contents that include news, sports, movies, user-generated content, and other viral videos.


Youtube Competition / Veoh


Description and features
Veoh was launcehed in 2004. The main feature of this Youtube competition is that it lets users to save shows onto their computers even before airing on television. It features a 5-minute preview of the content that lets users have a sample of the selection. Some of its more popular contents are CBS shows, Lion Gates films, and original Veoh shows.

Similarities with Youtube
It also showcases major studio content, user-generated contents, and independent productions. Because of copyright issues on some of its contents, Veoh is faced with lawsuits from different media organizations.


There are still a good number of video sharing sites that are not mentioned here. Nevertheless, these applications are here to stay. To generate more traffic and subsequently increase sales, business owners must now take the initiative and be assertive enough to venture into alternative marketing strategies. It is all up to business owners and marketers to take the marketing opportunity that these sites offer.
